Jerry Lynn Britten, 76, of Zearing, Iowa passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2021. A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 7 from 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in Zearing at the Gogerty Park (East end of Main St.). His funeral service will immediately follow the visitation and begin at 2:30 p.m. at the park with Pastor Tom Poppe officiating. Burial will follow in the Lincoln Township Cemetery in Zearing.
He was born in State Center, Iowa on April 22nd, 1945, to Harold and Ruth (Lund) Britten. Jerry attended the Zearing-NESCO school system and graduated in 1963. He graduated from Iowa State University in ag education in 1967. He was a lifetime member of Bethel United Methodist church.
Upon graduation from college, Jerry taught vocational agriculture at Aurelia and United Community, served in the US Army during the Vietnam conflict, and enjoyed a brief career in ag lending in the Rockwell City area. In 1971, Jerry was married to Leola Waldo. In 1974, Jerry returned to Zearing to begin farming and started a crop insurance agency. Jerry had a lifelong love of agriculture, stewarding the land & caring for others.
Jerry also had many non-agricultural interests including traveling, bluegrass festivals, ISU sporting events, playing guitar, singing, camping, canoeing, boating, and visiting. He took an active part in many community activities and sat on many boards at the local, county & state levels.
Jerry loved any activity that involved family and friends, especially interacting with his grandchildren. He loved attending their many events, giving them hugs, and encouraging them in their interests.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Leola and their 3 sons and families; Chad & Sara of Zearing and their children Noah, Mary, Aubrey & Levi; Jeff & Rachel of Ames and their children Jada, Kora & Lyza; Mark & Jennifer of Story City and their children Trevor & Emma; Brother & Sister-in-law LeRoy & Kathleen Waldo; Sister-in-law Karen Combs; and his nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Harold, mother Ruth, stepfather Jerry Coughenour, brothers Kent and Alan, and sister Sharon.
